The Impact of Radically Imposed Silence - Joyce Angela Jellison

This project almost did not happen.

After months of emailing and calling Lynn Lizotte at the Framingham State Prison for Women in Masschusetts, I was tired of running in circles. My calls went unanswered, my emails bounced back and when I did get the opportunity to speak to Ms. Lizotte, she was often disengaged and distracted.  My mission was to receive permission to come into the prison and encourage women to document their stories from the insiide . The Department of Correction's lack of response and bureacratic stalling had become quite obviously a silencing technigue and I am ashamed to say, it was effective. I was quite literally worn thin and silenced indefinitely.

Everything we have been traditionally educated about silence is wrong when applied to persons seperated from society at large. The age old idioms, Silence is Golden and Loose Lips sink ships are deadly when put into action as divisive tool to destroy individuals from within.
